CALL FOR ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MINIATURES - MUSICA VIVA FESTIVAL 2008 - “SOUND WALK”

Miso Music Portugal and the Música Viva Festival 2008 convokes composers to send electroacoustic miniatures to be diffused at the “Sound Walk” installation during the Música Viva Festival 2008 from the 19th to the 27th of September at Belem Arts Centre in Lisbon.
The Sound Walk is an outdoor stereo installation along the 100 meter walk way that leads to the main entrances of the Belem Arts Centre concert halls. Several loudspeakers will be placed on each side of this walk way, and the “Sound Walk” will be running daily during the festival from 10am until 12pm.

Rules:
1) There are no restrictions according to age or nationality.
2) The aim of the call is the creation of sound miniatures using the language of Electro-acoustic music. The minimum duration is of two minutes, and the maximum of five minutes. Pieces that do not meet these requirements will not be considered.
3) Only one piece by composer may be presented.
4) Only audio CDs will be accepted.
5) The composer of the piece must also record on separate tracks on the CD to be sent, his/her name and the title of his/her piece spoken aloud. This will work as an announcement for each piece and will be placed before each piece during the “Sound Walk” installation.
6) Pieces must be sent by registered mail to:

7) The name of the participant, a short biography and contacts should also be enclosed, as well as information about the piece (methods used, concept, etc.)
8) The closing date for sending the pieces and extra information's is the 25th August 2008, post marked.
9) A maximum of 25 miniatures from all those entered will be selected and diffused at “Sound Walk”.
9) Participation in this call implies the acceptance of its rules.

REGULAMENTO

In order to encourage the composition of chamber music with electronics, Miso Music Portugal and the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble are organising, the “2nd Sond’Ar-te Composition Competition 2009 - Chamber Music with Electronics”

The Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble is an ensemble of outstanding soloists living in Portugal specifically dedicated to the “mixed repertoire”, in which acoustic instruments are combined with the most recent electronic technologies.

1. Applications are invited for the full ensemble 5 instruments: flute (doubling piccolo, alto flute or bass flute); clarinet in Bb (doubling A, Eb, Bb bass clarinet), violin, cello, piano (also keyboards/synthesizers/midi grand piano, but not disklavier) with tape or with live-electronics mandatory.

2. The works submitted may include a maximum of eight channels loudspeaker system; can use the following audio sequencers: Ardour, Digital Performer, ProTools, Logic Pro; the interactive applications Max/MSP/Jitter and Supercollider all of which able to run on MacOSX. Any extra software and/or plug-in must run on Mac OSX, must be freeware and need to be provided by the applicant.

3. The duration of the submitted works should be between 7 (seven) and 20 (twenty minutes).

4. he competition is open to composers of any nationality, without any age limit, each of whom may submit only one work, composed in 2001 or after, which must not have been commercially published or awarded a prize in any national or international competition. Previous winners of the Sond'Ar-te Composition Competition and Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble commission recipients will not be eligible.

5. All submissions must be accompanied by the following materials and information:

a. Four copies of the score and electronic part on CD-Rom (pre-recorded material and/or live processing patches in final version ready for performance and including all necessary instructions for set-up and performance). If there is a recording of the piece available this should be also included in the submission in a CD audio or DVD in the case of multi-media and cross-media projects.
All of the materials described above are an integral part of the work and will be taken into consideration by the jury. The work description should be written in English.

b. A short biography of the composer in English (up to 500 words with a soft copy in Microsoft Word or text (RTF) document format saved on a disc).

c. A recent photo of the composer (preferably in jpeg format saved on a disc).

d. Proof of nationality such as copy of passport,...

e. Mailing address and e-mail address of the composer, with website of the composer or link to the publisher, if available.

f. Programme notes of the submitted work in English (approx. 200 words with a soft copy in Microsoft Word or text (RTF) document format saved on a disc).

g. The year of composition. Submitted works must be composed in or after 2001. Please specify if the work is a world premiere.

h. An accurate estimate of the duration of the work.

i. All necessary information/documentation relevant for consideration by the Jury and organizers, apart from the recording or score (e.g., scheme of the total system, list of equipments, etc.)

j. Recording of the work if available.

7. Application Fee
Submissions must be accompanied by a proof of payment of the entry fee of 35€ paid by PayPal


8. Deadline
Deadline for entries is April 30, 2009 (postmarked).

9. Jury
An international jury will select a Prize Winner piece and the Best Portuguese piece.
The Jury will announce its decision at the middle of June 2009.
The Jury may decide that none of the works submitted merit prize or selection. The Jury's decision shall be final.

10. Award
The Prize Winner work and the Best Portuguese work will be both performed by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble as part of its repertoire in 2009/2010 concert season.
Furthermore, the Prize Winner work will be recorded by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble and released on CD by Miso Records on a date to be announced.

12. By submitting to the competition, the composer must agree to make available all necessary performing materials for free (including score and parts, audio/video materials, etc.) for the performances of the work, if selected, until the 15th of July 2009.

13. All entries will be treated with great care. However, Miso Music Portugal will not take responsibility for the loss or damage of scores, audio / video or any other submitted materials.

14. The submitted scores and materials will only be returned if this is expressly requested and the cost of postage or freight has been paid by the composer, otherwise the materials submitted as entries to the competition shall be kept in the archives of Miso Music Portugal.

15. Submissions, which do not meet the conditions or deadlines specified above, will not be considered.

16. Submission of an entry to the competition implicates acceptance of all the provisions of these regulations.

17. Any questions, which may arise as to the interpretation of these regulations, shall be clarified by Miso Music Portugal.

9º CONCURSO INTERNACIONAL DE COMPOSIÇÃO ELECTROACÚSTICA Música Viva 2008

REGULAMENTO

1 - As obras concorrentes deverão ser obras electroacústicas sobre suporte, compostas em estúdio, difundidas por altifalantes em concerto sem intervenção de fontes sonoras ao vivo. Podem incluir até um máximo de oito canais e deverão ter uma duração compreendida entre cinco e quinze minutos. Poderão participar compositores portugueses na categoria nacional e compositores de qualquer nacionalidade na categoria internacional, com idade não superior a 35 anos em 31/12/2007. Os compositores portugueses são automáticamente candidatos apenas com uma obra a concurso às duas categorias (nacional e internacional); podendo vir a cumular o prémio em ambas as categorias.

Cada concorrente poderá participar com apenas uma obra, não editada comercialmente, nem premiada em qualquer concurso nacional ou internacional. Um compositor premiado no Concurso de Composição Electroacústica Música Viva não poderá apresentar uma obra a concurso nos dois anos seguintes.

2 - As obras concorrentes deverão ser enviadas em triplicado, em versão estéreo (suporte: CD ou DAT), para além de um exemplar da versão original multicanais no caso das obras com mais de dois canais (neste caso o suporte poderá ser ADAT, ou CD-R com os ficheiros audio correspondentes a cada um dos canais em formato SDII, AIFF ou WAV).

3 - As obras concorrentes, unicamente identificáveis, sob pena de afastamento do concurso, pelos próprios títulos, deverão ser enviadas em triplicado até 30 de Junho de 2008 (registadas, fazendo fé o carimbo dos CTT). Aos exemplares de cada composição deverá ser anexado um sobrescrito fechado, apenas com a indicação do título da composição, o qual contenha os elementos indispensáveis à identificação do autor, uma cópia do bilhete de identidade ou do passaporte, assim como o contacto do mesmo; solicita-se também um breve curriculum, uma breve descrição da obra e uma fotografia do compositor. Os materiais das obras a concurso ficarão em arquivo na Miso Music Portugal.
As obras deverão ser enviadas para: Concurso de Composição Electroacústica 2008 - Miso Music Portugal - Rua do Douro 92, Rebelva, 2775-318 Parede, Portugal.

4 – Prémios: o júri poderá seleccionar até 3 obras numa categoria geral que inclui todas as nacionalidades, e uma obra numa categoria nacional (apenas para compositores portugueses).

As obras seleccionadas serão apresentadas no âmbito do Festival Música Viva 2008, num concerto pela Orquestra de Altifalantes, e serão editadas posteriormente em CD pela Miso Records, no caso dos autores das obras seleccionadas estarem de acordo com as condições oferecidas pela editora.

5 - O Júri internacional constituído por cinco membros, tornará pública a sua decisão na sessão de abertura do Festival Música Viva 2008.

6 - O Júri poderá admitir que nenhuma das obras concorrentes merece ser seleccionada. Das decisões do Júri não haverá recurso.

7 - A participação no Concurso implica a aceitação de todos os artigos do presente regulamento.

8 - Caberá à Miso Music Portugal esclarecer quaisquer dúvidas que a interpretação deste regulamento eventualmente suscite.
