IREM – International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music
The IREM – International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music was initiated in 1984 by the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music (ICEM) in collaboration with the International Music Council – IMC/UNESCO
It is an exchange forum for electroacoustic music dedicated especially to radio professionals inspired by the International Rostrum of Composers (IRC). Its mission is to promote and diffuse the most important works of the electroacoustic repertoire on an international level, thus motivating the dynamics of electroacoustic musical production.
Over the years the Rostrum has become an exceptional occasion for the international circulation of works and composers dedicated to this musical genre.
Broadcasting organizations from all countries through the world as well as national federations of ICEM are invited to participate at the Rostrum. Electroacoustic works presented at the IREM have to be previously selected by each participating radio producer or national federation. Each organization can propose until 30 minutes of music maximum. After the listening sessions, the assembly of delegates selects and recommends the most important ones among the works listened to. These will be presented in concerts by the participating federations and broadcast by the participating radio stations.
Miso Music Portugal is the Portuguese Federation of ICEM; in close collaboration with RTP Antena 2 they are in charge of hosting the 2007 IREM in Lisbon, which will take place from the 17th to the 21st December.
Concerts and broadcasts of electroacoustic music are programmed during this important musical event.
ICEM – International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music
The ICEM was founded in 1981 by several composers of electroacoustic music (J. Appleton, F. Barrière, P. Boeswillwald, C. Clozier, B. Truax among others) who regularly got together at the Synthèse Festival in Bourges and felt the need of an international organization devoted to the aesthetical, pedagogical and economical conditions of this musical genre, as well as its production, creation and diffusion conditions.
An international organization was hence born that engages in all aspects of electroacoustic music: promoting it, assuring free movement of people and ideas and full respect for composers’ freedom and rights. In 1983 this structure was integrated in UNESCO’s International Music Council and is nowadays composed of 21 national federations: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Each national federation follows its own programme, taking different aesthetic movements and national influences into account.
ICEM’s moral and professional authority provides a double mission: as a professional influence group in the service of international solidarity, exchanges and movements of men and ideas and also as a reservoir of thoughts, analysis and proposition.
Due to the diversity and multiplicity of its members, ICEM represents the historic reality and development dynamics of a plural and refined thought about musical composition, communication and performance.
In collaboration with the International Music Council – IMC/UNESCO, ICEM founded and regularly organizes the bi-annual IREM – International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music, where broadcasting corporations and national federations of ICEM participate.
