Viana Music Festival - Wind Instrument Master Class
August 6th to 9th, 2008
The International Music Festival, Viana do Castelo offers an advanced study program for wind musicians. This course will give students an opportunity to work intensively for four days with faculty comprised of international statue performers and teachers.
There will be daily orchestra rehearsals, culminating in the performance at the Gala Concert on the 13th August. The rehearsals are also intended to introduce the student to the real world of professional orchestra.
The Festival Symphony is comprised of top musicians from 15 countries.

18th Annual Deep Listening Retreat
June 29th - July 4th, 2008
The 18th Annual Deep Listening Retreat, facilitated by Pauline Oliveros, Ione, and Heloise Gold, is the first opportunity to make an intensive, practice-based study of Experimental Music in Ireland with leaders of the field. Deep Listening is an approach to sound, listening and performance developed by composer, performer, and theorist Pauline Oliveros. Deep Listening Retreats are open to anyone interested in exploring and expanding their experience of and relationship with sound. Through their focus on community, healing, well-being, and creativity, Deep Listening retreats are of particular interest to musicians, art/music therapists, dancers, theatre practitioners, meditators and visual artists interested in expanding their practice through sound. Creating Music and Audio for Film, Video and Games
Bruce Pennycook, DMA
Professor Bruce Pennycook (Doctor of Musical Arts, Stanford, '78) is a composer, new media developer and media technology specialist.
Prof. Pennycook teaches music composition, film scoring and digital media and conducts research in new media interface design. He is also the Panel Chair of the Digital Arts and Media program at the University of Texas at Austin.
June 16-20, 23-27, 2008 | 15h-17h (lecture) and 18h-20h (lab) - Total: 40 hrs
This course will explore current technologies and techniques for the creation of music, audio and sound effects for film, video and games. It will be based primarily on the widely used Apple Logic Studio 8. Students will need to be comfortable with the Mac OS-X platform. However, no prior knowledge of Logic is required. The course will cover basic musical forms, looping and mixing, soft instrument plugins, synchronizing musical materials to video, acquiring and modifying audio effects files, advanced sound treatment using Logic plugins, game audio design, track layering, and surround mixing. Students will complete five short assignments and one longer project using video clips provided for the class or materials that the students may have.
There are no inscription fees to attend the workshop, however inscription is mandatory.

Spatialised Interpretation Workshop by Annette Vande Gorne
How to analyse the spatial dimension of acousmatic works, how to highlight the spaces created by the composer during a performance or even to recreate the dynamic and spatial movements? This workshop brings together the analysis and the interpretation and culminates with a concert given by the participants.
The workshop will be conducted by Annette Vande Gorne, composer, professor at the Royal Conservatory of Mons in Belgium and specialises in the performance of acousmatic music.
1, 2 and 3 of April, 2008

The workshop will be given in French and elementary level English.

International Course "Performers Village 08"
August 1-28, 2008
Performers Village is a four-week course – production of a performance open to professional actors, dancers, singers, musicians as well as directors, choreographers, playwrights, scriptwriters and stage designers from different countries, creative genres, techniques and styles. Film makers, photographers, body painters, mask makers and multimedia artists will also find a role in this process.
The programme is designed as the intensive consecutive process of mounting the performance. As a result of practical training, discussions and rehearsals all participants will become the co-authors of the work-in-progress under the artistic direction of Sergey Ostrenko. As a component of the real process the work-in-progress will be shown to the spectator. The Village 08 is an opportunity for professional performers to find new devices for realization of creative ideas together with colleagues from different parts of the world.

Acanthes 2008 - Composition Workshops

These workshops are intended for composers who wish to present a new instrumental work and who wish to benefit, during the necessary rehearsals, from the experience and advice of the members of the Acanthes teaching staff.
These workshops, placed under the artistic direction of Michael Jarrell, Yan Maresz and Marco Stroppa, will be preceded by a ‘round table’ analysis, and will provide composers with the opportunity to make final adjustments to their pieces as they hear them being played.

European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO) Audition Courses
25-28 March & 28-31 March 2008
The European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO) is now inviting applications for the 2008 Audition Courses from Europe’s most talented young baroque musicians.
If you are under 30 years old and have an EU passport, you could be a member of EUBO 2008 for projects with directors Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Enrico Onofri and Roy Goodman. Between July and December 2008, EUBO will undertake four tours, rehearsing in Luxembourg, Germany and France and giving concerts throughout Europe (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, UK, Spain, Sweden, Bulgaria & Romania).
Anyone who wishes to be considered for selection for the 2008 EUBO must attend one of the two courses (25-28 March or 28-31 March). The closing date for applications is Monday 3 March.
