Composition Master Class

Description of the course:

In this course of acousmatic composition, Annette Vande Gorne will present her work as a composer and her pioneering perspective as regards the pedagogy of electroacoustic music.

With a profound knowledge of the work of Pierre Schaeffer, and of other pioneers of electronic music, Annette Vande Gorne will also discuss some of the greatest works of the repertoire.  Pupils will have the opportunity to show their own works, which will be analysed and commented upon during the Master Class.

 

Observations:

Annette Vande Gorne

Founder and program director of the Musiques & Recherches center and the Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio (established in 1982) in Ohain (Belgium). Organizer of the 1st International Acousmatic Festival in Brussels (1984) and numerous concerts since. Publisher of the review Lien and compiler of a documentation center on acousmatic art. Professor of electroacoustic composition at conservatories in Liège, Brussels and Mons. Spatialization of acousmatic music on tape, performing numerous concerts in Belgium and internationally. At sixteen, she discovered the music of words (in the poetry of René Char and Saint-John Perse ) and the same efforts to give life color and meaning that she finds in the music of sounds. Several of her works represent different stages of research into the various methods of weaving together text and music offered by electroacoustics today.

Description of the course:

In this composition course, Marek Choloniewsky presents a selection of aesthetic concepts of audiovisual art based both on less recent and very new technology. These sessions will also include practical demonstrations and applications of the MaWe and MAX/ MSP software. The possibilities of the integration of conventional forms of art with the most advanced contemporary techniques will be explored, with reference to his own work, which has included Audio Art, Interactive Art, GlobalMix, GPS-Art, Web Collaborative Art,…

Marek Choloniewsky

Born in 1953 in Cracow, studied organ (with L.Werner), theory of music and composition (with B.Schaeffer) at the Krakow Academ of Music, where since 1976, has been employed on the faculty of the Electro-acoustic Music Studio (currently as an Associate Professor of Composition). In 1977 he founded Cracow Society of Contemporary Music - Muzyka Centrum, largely engaged in concert work. Since 80-ties he co-founded many ensembles and music groups: Freight Train (with P. Bikont, K.Knittel), CH&K&K (with K.Knittel, W.Kiniorski), mc2 duo (with M.Chyrzynski), NaturalPlastic (with A.Knoles), which deals with concert and recording activities. Since 1987 he has been giving concerts, workshops and lectures in Europe, Asia, North and South America. In addition, in 1986, he founded his own annual International Concert Series called "Audio Art" which presented the most important artists and achievements in "sound art" from all over the world. A world renown lecturer, composer, "live computer music" performer, and author of audio-visual computer projects, Chołoniewski writes instrumental and computer music for theater, film and radio. He is initiator and artistic director of Audio Art Festival (in Cracow and Seoul – with J.Ryu), International Workshops for New Music Cracow/Stuttgart (with M.Hermann). In-between 1993 – 1999 he was an artistic director of the International Academy for New Composition and Audio Art in Schwaz (Austria – with Marianne Penz). Since 2000 he is director of the Electro-acoustic Music Studio at the Cracow Academy of Music. Founder of open, outdoor projects: GlobalMix, ArtBoat and GPS-Art. Since 2003 he is coordinator and cooperator of European projects: Bridges, Ensemble Spiel (with S.Meier), European Music Cursus (IRCAM). In 2005 he founded Polish Federation of Electroacoustic Music (section of CIME).

In this composition course, Philippe Hurel will discuss his work, showing the concepts and techniques of which he makes frequent use, and which point towards new paths for spectral music.

Philippe Hurel

Né en 1955.

Après des études au Conservatoire et à l’Université de Toulouse (violon, analyse, écriture, musicologie), puis au Conservatoire de Paris (composition et analyse), il participe aux travaux de la “Recherche musicale” à l' Ircam 1985/86 - 1988/89. Il est pensionnaire de la Villa Medicis à Rome de 1986 à 1988.

En 1995, il reçoit le Prix de la Fondation Siemens à Münich pour ses “Six Miniatures en Trompe-l’œil” .  

Il enseigne à l’Ircam dans le cadre du Cursus d’informatique musicale de 1997 à 2001.

Il est en résidence à l’Arsenal de Metz et à la Philarmonie de Lorraine de 2000 à 2002.

Il reçoit le Prix Sacem des compositeurs en 2002 et le Prix Sacem de la meilleure création de l’année en 2003 pour « Aura ».

Depuis 1991, il est directeur artistique de l’Ensemble Court-circuit placé sous la direction musicale de Pierre-André Valade.

Ses œuvres sont éditées par Gérard Billaudot Editeur et par les Editions Henry Lemoine.

Elles ont été interprétées par de nombreux ensembles et orchestres sous la direction de chefs tels que Pierre Boulez, Esa Pekka Salonen, David Robertson, Jonathan Nott, Reinbert de Leeuw, Bernard Kontarsky, Stefan Asbury, Kent Nagano, Peter Eötvös, Markus Stenz, Ed Spanjaard… et bien entendu Pierre-André Valade avec lequel il travaille régulièrement.

Durant la saison 2004/2005 2005 il a été l’invité du festival Ultima d’Oslo où ont été créées trois  de ses dernières pièces : « Trois études mécaniques » par Bit20 ensemble, « Phonus » par Benoît Fromanger et l’orchestre Philharmonique d’Oslo et « Ritornello » par Anne-Cécile Cuniot et Jean-Marie Cottet.  Par ailleurs, sa dernière œuvre « Non-Dit » a été créée en juin 2005 par le Jeune chœur de Paris à la Cité de la musique.Cette saison, « Phonus » pour flûte et orchestre et « Flashback » pour grand orchestre seront joués par l’ Orchestre National de Bordeaux les 9 novembre et 7 décembre 2005.

Ses prochaines pièces lui ont été commandées par l’Ircam, Accroche-Note, le festival Ultima (Oslo), le quatuor Diotima …
