2nd Sond’Ar-te Composition Competition 2009 - Chamber Music with Electronics
File with full information and curricula
This new ensemble, founded by Miso Music Portugal with the artistic direction of Miguel Azguime and Pedro Amaral as a conductor, is devoted to a repertoire that joins acoustic instruments and the most recent electronic technologies.
Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble’soriginal characteristic is the significance given to the interpretation of instrumental repertoire with electronic means. It is therefore an innovative project, both nationally and internationally.
The reasons and need for this singularity are justified by the most recent tendencies in the history of contemporary music. The same way the development of the great orchestra was connected, as a paradigm, to the European repertoire of the XIXth century, so the XXth century post-war repertoire was connected to the contemporary paradigm: the ensemble.
This new paradigm, though more restrict, is not less characteristic. Thus, the generalization of the musical technologies during the eighties and the nineties has brought a democratization of electroacoustic means. All notions of music writing became larger, bringing an ever-growing mixed repertoire, which imposes a perceptive change on the instrumental and organizational paradigm. Worldwide ensembles have sought to adapt to this new context, namely by forging partnerships for each project with studios, music laboratories or technology centres. The ensemble as an institution became versatile, trying to embrace both the repertoires that were in its origin and the mixed repertoires, which have attained an essential and determining position in contemporary musical creation.
Within this particular context, Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble is, from its very origin, specifically dedicated to the performance of this new repertoire.
The ensemble has a permanent structure of seven musicians plus conductor – flute, clarinet, piano, violin, cello 1 for the live-electronics and 1 for sound projection – who are sporadically joined by other performers, according to the programs.
Its premiere is due on the 11th September 2007 in Lisbon, at the Phillippe Friedman Concert Hall in the Franco-Portuguese Institut on the opening concert of the 2007 edition of the Música Viva Festival; and on the 18th September at Casa da Música in Porto, also within the Música Viva Festival.

Critic
“With the confidence of their performance, their commitment and the musicians’ outstanding technical level, Sond’Ar-te has conquered. Pedro Amaral’s direction was distinct, clear and effective.
…We wish that Sond’Ar-te becomes an European reference in the domain of contemporary music.”
