Lab for Electroacoustic Creation - LEC

Continuing its policy of promoting and encouraging musical creation, Miso Music Portugal has created in 2005 a program of artistic residencies in LEC (Lab for Electroacoustic Creation).
LEC provides composers not only the electroacustic music creation studio but also a rehearsal studio with a multi-channel diffusion system. LEC residencies also gives composers the opportunity to present their work in concert during the Miso Music Portugal Season or the Musica Viva Festival, using the Miso Music Loudspeaker Orchestra.
LEC also establishes partnerships with several foreign studios offering Portuguese composers the opportunity to make residencies abroad.

Every year the Miso Music Portugal Electroacoustic Studio (LEC) accepts applications for five (5) artistic residencies from portuguese and foreign composers.

Residencies' applications are open from July 2009.

Applications

Terms and conditions:
- The LEC residencies have the purpose of challenging musical creation, by giving young composers the means to develop their work in the field of electroacoustic creation.
- All of the pieces composed at LEC will be performed/ presented in the Musica Viva Festival later that year.
- The resident composers at LEC will have complete access to the use of every listed equipment in the document “available equipment”.
- The residencies will have a duration of two (2) consecutive months
- Miso Music Portugal will provide every month the amount of 300 euros to help covering for the composer’s expenses.

Opening hours:
- LEC’s opening hours are weekdays between 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 

Admission Requirements:
- The applications for the LEC’s artistic residencies must contain a presentation project of an electroacoustic work. The applicants not only have to present this draft but also a curriculum vitae and other important information considered necessary to the decision. Recommendation letters can also be added to the applications. The applications must include recordings of works of the composer.
- All applications will undergo a preliminary study and afterwards, the first selected composers will be convened to an interview (in person or over the phone). Only after these stages will the LEC Board make their decision.
- For an application to be approved, the composer must accept all terms and conditions for the use of the LEC.
- The selected composers will have a two (2) months period of time to create a new electroacoustic piece for tape, aproximately 5 to 15 minutes long. This work’s premiere will take place as part of one of the next Music Viva Festival concerts using the Miso Music “Loudspeaker Orchestra”. All of the ulterior presentations of the same work must mention LEC as the context of its creation.
- The artistic residency at LEC implies that the occupation chart/schedule is absolutely regarded as agreed for each composer.

Usage and safety rules and regulations
- smoking is not allowed
- eating is not allowed
- the resident composer will be held responsible for any damage caused by disrespect of the described rules or of any kind of inadequate or neglectful use of the available equipment.
- the resident composer must inform the Studio technician every time he/she detects any  sort of irregularity or equipment malfunction.
- during the 2 months residency, the composer is to be considered responsible for all the equipment in use and therefore must answer for any kind of embezzlement or equipment destruction.
- An occupation timetable will be defined along with the resident composer. That timetable must be strictly followed. If the composer does not have a valid reason to fall short of this requirement, the residency as well as the finantial support shall be immediately cancelled.
