Rui Dias - Concerto for improvisers and laptop orchestra
Exploring the laptop orchestra as a means of musical expression, this piece introduces several aspects, both conceptual and technical, that were made possible by the use of computer mediation, using network connection between the conductor and the performers, to create a musical paradigm that can loosely be described as a crossing between serialism and indeterminism. Planned as a study of some of the many resources and potential of the laptop orchestra, the piece is divided in six sections, each one exploring different musical possibilities of the use of the computer as a mediator, that “listens” all the events played by the orchestra, and adapts algorithmically the possibilities of pitch and dynamics.

Art’s Birthday is a celebration in memory of Robert Filliou, who declared, on January 17 1963, that Art had been born exactly 1,000,000 years ago when someone had dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. Ten years later he celebrated Art’s 1,000,010th birthday at the Neue Galerie, Aachen.
